Biography

Born in 1968 and based in Brighouse, West Yorkshire. Matthew has enjoyed a lifelong interest in art, graduating from Leicester Polytechnic in 1989 with a BA Honours in Graphic Design. He has spent most of his career in the greeting card industry, whilst painting as a hobby. Matthew has produced numerous commissions for private buyers, and in 1996 was the winner of the townscape and landscape category in the "Society of All Artists" open painting competition. He has also taken part in many local exhibitions, some nationals and the international "Europastel Exhibition" in Italy and Russia during 2002, and also shows on the internet.

In 2003 one of his pieces was auctioned in aid of the The Samaritans at Dean Clough Galleries in Halifax, he is also taking part in their Christmas show. In 2004 a piece of mixed media work he called "Sailing" was included in "The Encyclopedia of Drawing Techniques" by Hazel Harrison, produced by Quatro London.

Matthews' most notable achievements include the following:

  • 1996 - Winner of the townscape and landscape category in the "Society For All Artists" open painting competition.

  • 2003 - Exhibited in the Europastel Exhibition in Italy and Russia.

  • 2003 - "Community" exhibition at Dean Clough, Halifax, in support of Halifax Samaritans.

  • 2006 - Winner of the amateur artist waterscape, boats or seascape category in the "Society For All Artists" open painting competition. This success was quickly followed with one of his paintings being shown at the Artist and Illustrator's exhibition at the Business Design Centre, Islington, London. He also had a painting selected for the "Artist's Open Show" at Leeds City Art Gallery.

 
 

Recent main themes have included water scenes and sunsets taking inspiration from visits to Scotland and the Welsh coast. New work features experiments with textures and impasto.
